<image:title>Blog Page - DRIFTLESS WATER DEFENDERS - ELKADER EVENT 2024 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Registered agent of DWD, Jim Larew, opened the meeting and introduced the proceeding speakers. Jim Larew explains the significance behind “Driftless Water Defenders as follows: “Driftless” the miraculous cultural and economic region of four states, of which hundreds of thousands of years ago glaciers largely left alone, resulted in rugged land formations, attracted determined, hard-working nature respecting citizens coming from thousands of points of origins. A region characterized originally with abundant sources of clean, accessible, and affordable water. “Water”, water is life. That crucial ingredient that every human has a basic civil right must have access to survive. The Iowa code says that rivers, aquifers, and streams, are public water and public wealth of the people. The water belongs to the people. “Defenders”, brave people who protect others from attack, assault, or injury. This is the purpose of our organization.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Speaker Steve Veysey explains trial exhibits from the Bloody Run Creek lawsuit. Steve Veysey first explains the details of Supreme Beef and sets the scene for his next two slides. Steve Veysey then explains that the runoff of Supreme Beef is negatively affecting Supreme Beef neighbor, Tammi Thompson. Tammi Thompson is an organic goat farmer, which means her product must meet specific standards to be considered organic. One factor to meet those standards is the quality of water given to the goats. Tammi Thompson’s well data shows that in 2008, her water well had little to no nitrates. Then, when re-tested in 2022, her well water was highly contaminated with nitrates. Tammi Thompson had to spend $65,000 to dig a new well to reach clean water in order to keep her farm up and running.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Keynote speaker and DWD president, Chris Jones, expresses his dismay with the State agencies’ permission for Bloody Run to exist at the starting point of a stream. He further expresses that change will not come from the industry, politicians, the universities, or the State agencies, to believe change will come from any of those entities is a fantasy. “We have to take what’s ours.” If we don’t wake up and tell those [who report that water quality advocacy is on the rise and gaining momentum] “you’re lying to me” then its not going to change. We have to demand change.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DWD president, Chris Jones, explained his qualifications as a water quality researcher, blogger, and avid outdoorsman. Chris Jones then discussed that change needs to happen through grassroots action, not just through the voting booth. There are few places in Iowa where one can step out and be immersed in nature, our parks are becoming smaller and of lesser quality, and our diminished water quality is a symptom of a greater environmental illness. Many Iowans feel hopeless and powerless, but there are ways to make a difference and make change for a greener future.</image:caption>

<image:title>DWD News - DWD MAY 2025 NEWSLETTER - One of the most important tools for solving Iowa’s water quality crisis is citizen action. DWD has shown itself to be creative and capable in directing attention and organizing public events that spotlight the state’s grievously polluted surface and groundwater. In support of DWD’s clean water advocacy the group announced a summer-long program on May 21 called the “48 Lakes Initiative.” The process will engage Iowans in a new social media-based dialogue concerning the deteriorating quality of Iowa’s water and the adverse consequences those conditions are having on Iowans’ recreational uses of that water. The first event for this summer-long program occurred over Memorial Day weekend.</image:title>

Many featured manmade lakes and public beaches. For generations, these sites provided middle class families opportunities to swim, boat, fish, and socialize. In recent years industrial farming pollutants have created dangerous water conditions. Most of the beaches, for many summer weekends, are closed to public use. It’s time to push back. <image:caption>DWD Celebrated Sustainability at 2025 Earth Day Festival Driftless Water Defenders participated in the 2025 Earth Day Festival, “Celebrating Sustainability” on April 26 at the Fairgrounds in Decorah. The DWD Earth Day exhibit featured local area water samples tested for nitrogen content. High nitrate levels in drinking water can lead to health problems, especially in infants. Prompting DWD’s concern with elevated nitrate levels are studies from health experts reporting that increased risks for cancer outcomes are related to long-term consumption of drinking water, even when nitrate levels are at half the EPA standard (5 mg/L). One of the major questions currently under debate is whether the EPA’s drinking water standard of 10 mg/L is sufficiently protective. Water samples presented at the Earth Day event were collected on April 24th – 26.t.h Here are a few sample results: · Upper Iowa River, (Pulpit Rock Campground): 8.0 mg/L · Ten Mile Creek, (West of Decorah off Walnut Creek Rd.) 26.0 mg/L · Upper Iowa River, (Ray’s Landing, New Albin) 8.7 mg/L The DWD booth also displayed Information about DWD’s “Oats Initiative,” an effort to encourage Iowa farmers to consider adding oats to their crop rotation to lower nitrates in groundwater. Quaker Oats sources its oats primarily from Canada, but Iowa was once a major oats producer. Tariffs on Canadian goods may convince Iowa farmers of the profitability of planting oats again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DWD at The Harkin Wellness Symposium On April 16 DWD President Chris Jones and legal counsel Jim Larew were featured speakers at the Harkin On Wellness Symposium: The Future of Clean Water, at Drake University in Des Moines. More than 150 people attended. Larew was the morning's keynote speaker. He addressed the topic: The Right to Clean Water. He described DWD's advocacy for a formal amendment to the Iowa Constitution's Bill of Rights to recognize a fundamental right of citizens to have access to clean water. He characterized the movement as "necessary" in light of recent structural changes to Iowa's political environment that has empowered industrial agricultural oligarchs. Larew compared the advancing clean-water movement to the civil and voting rights activism in the deep south 70 years ago. He likened the present efforts to that which preceded Rosa Parks' refusal to move from her seat at the front of the bus in December 1955 to allow white passengers that boarded after her. "In Iowa, collectively, we are on the 'Environmental Bus,'" Larew stated. “However, now, when representatives from industrial-agricultural interests get on the bus, too many people--particularly, too often, elected representatives--run to the back of the bus." Jones accepted an award presented by The Harkin Institute to DWD in recognition of the group's effective advocacy. Less than a year old, DWD has more than 250 members and is involved in a half-dozen litigated matters. Jones said industrial-agricultural leaders have made a "conscientious, organized effort ...to deny Iowans a better quality of life." He described himself as "exhausted" by a "failure to recognize" the problem. "The time has come for a new approach."</image:caption>

      <image:title>DWD News - DWD MARCH 2025 NEWSLETTER</image:title>
<image:caption>New Projects Iowa Oats Initiative DWD is laying the groundwork for a new project to revive the Iowa oats harvest. The goal is to promote crop diversity, especially in northeast Iowa, add to farm incomes, and significantly reduce water pollution. Oats were once the ‘second’ crop in Iowa, next to corn, with 6.5 million acres planted in 1950. Work animals that consumed most of the oats vanished and the state oat harvest diminished to 120,000 acres. Soybeans displaced oats and other crops, with corn remaining the most heavily fertilized crop. Soybean production and hogs and chickens concentrated into factory farm CAFOs have gone hand in hand. Oats, meanwhile, are ecologically relevant because they require 80 to 90 percent less fertilizer, reduce soil erosion, and improve soil health. In the aftermath of the 25 percent tariff that the president wants to levy on Canada, oats also have become economically relevant, especially in Iowa. Canada is the sole supplier of oats to Cedar Rapids where Quaker Oats operates the largest oats mill in the world. DWD is planning a public meeting to launch the Iowa Oats Initiative. We’re talking to business executives, labor leaders, farmers, local government officials, and citizens. Our is a message of good news for the economy and water quality -- for local industry, farms and mills, communities, and residents. More to come. <image:caption>Highlandville Clean Water School On May 17, at the Highlandville School, DWD will launch a new public education project: The Highlandville Clean Water School. An important part of the clean water movement is to educate and inspire citizens in new forms of clean-water activism. The free day-long event will involve citizens who will engage each other and learn how to do water testing for nitrates and other contaminants. There will be time for those who want to hike or learn how to trout fish to do that. For those who want to camp overnight, there will be a time for sharing around campfires. The Clean Water School curriculum and activities are modeled after the Highland Folk School, which taught students in the pre-Civil Rights era to read, write, survive voter registration obstacles and learn to defend against brutalities. Our belief is that Iowans have a fundamental right to access clean water. Our vision is to teach water testing practices and theories, and encourage students to return home to teach and advocate about Iowa's need for cleaner water. More to come.</image:caption>

Iowa voters approved the Trust Fund in 2010 with 63% support. It was intended to be filled with a portion of any new sales tax revenue.
